How to Rank Your Website Higher in ChatGPT and AI Search Results
I watched ChatGPT climb to the 5th most visited website on Earth and thought: I should probably figure out how this works. Turns out the citation patterns are wild - Wikipedia gets 48% of ChatGPT's links, Reddit dominates Perplexity. Here's what I learned digging through the data.
Search is changing fast
In 2025, the way people find information is shifting. AI platforms give direct answers. Users don't need to click through to websites as much.
According to recent data, ChatGPT accounts for about 80% of AI search traffic. This means more "zero-click" searches where users get information directly from the search results page, never visiting your site.
AI Overviews are showing up more often too. About 13% of queries triggered AI-generated summaries in March 2025, up from 6.5% in January. That's a fast climb. Understanding how search engines work still matters, but the game is expanding.

The Similarweb May 2025 website visitor report ranks ChatGPT as the 5th most visited website globally. It's now bigger than X/Twitter, TikTok, Wikipedia, and Reddit. That's kind of insane when you think about it.
What the citation data actually shows
A recent study by Profound analyzed over 30 million citations across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity from August 2024 to June 2025. The differences are pretty stark:
ChatGPT: Heavily relies on Wikipedia (47.9% of citations). Other top sources include Reddit (11.3%), Forbes (6.8%), and TechRadar (5.5%).
Google AI Overviews: More balanced distribution with Reddit (21%), YouTube (18.8%), Quora (14.3%), and LinkedIn (13%).
Perplexity: Prefers community-generated content. Reddit makes up 46.7% of citations, followed by YouTube (13.9%) and Gartner (7%).

The takeaway: if you want visibility across AI platforms, diversify where you show up. Get on Wikipedia if you can. Participate in community forums. Don't put all your eggs in one basket.
Getting cited by ChatGPT
Given that Wikipedia accounts for nearly half of ChatGPT's citations, having a well-maintained Wikipedia page helps a lot. If your business or topic qualifies, make sure the information is accurate and properly sourced.
Building backlinks from reputable sources like Forbes, TechCrunch, and Business Insider also matters. These publications appear frequently in ChatGPT's citations.
Structured data (schema markup) helps too. Clear information about your content makes it easier for AI to understand and reference your site.
