A link score is one input, not the answer
Authority scores were built to estimate how well a page ranks in link-based search. AI answers use more. In a study of 75,000 brands, mentions of the brand across the web tracked Google AI Overview visibility at 0.66. Backlinks tracked it at 0.22. Studies disagree on how strong the link effect is, and none shows that links cause citations.
So we keep links as one input. Next to them we check a domain’s history, its content, and whether crawlers can reach it. Read the evidence (source: Ahrefs, May 2025).

- Built from links
- Weighted links from sources AI engines rely on. Each link is weighted by the source that published it. The published methodology names example sources; the weights stay private.
- A measure of provenance, not a count of citations
- It is computed from a domain's links. We do not observe any engine citing anything, and the score does not claim to predict it.
- Scores move
- Listing scores refresh between releases as new link data arrives, and can rise or fall.
