How this website traffic checker works
What the monthly top-site lists measure, what they leave out, and how to use a band instead of a number.
Where the data comes from
A public monthly list ranks sites by how many real users load them. It is built from the browsing of a sample of users who opted in to share usage data, on desktop and mobile. We copy each month's top-1M list as published and keep it, so one lookup gives you the whole history since 2021-02.
Nothing here is modelled. We do not multiply keyword rankings by search volume, and we do not guess at visits. If the site is in the list, you see the band the list put it in; if it is not, we say so.
Why a band, not a visit count
The list is published in bands: top 1,000, then 5,000, 10,000, 50,000, 100,000, 500,000 and 1,000,000. The 5k, 50k and 500k steps only exist from 2023, so we fold each into the band above it. A 2021 month and a 2025 month then sit on one scale. Within a band there is no ordering and no number to report, and we do not invent one.
A band still answers the question most people ask: is this a site real people visit, how long has that been true, and is it getting better or worse? A top-100k site that has held its band for four years is a different animal from a site that appeared for two months.
What is not in the list
A site outside the top 1M is not necessarily empty. Most sites in the world are outside it. The list also leaves out users who did not opt in to share usage data, and traffic that never loads a page in a browser. Subdomains are folded into their registrable domain, so a blog on a subdomain is read as its parent site.
For an absolute visit count you need the site's own analytics, or a modelled estimate from a vendor. The comparison below lists what each free vendor tool shows and says about its data.
How rank differs from visits
A visit count says how many sessions a site had. A rank says how it compares with every other site. Two sites in the same band can differ several times over in visits, and a seasonal site can change band while its audience barely moves. Use rank history to compare sites and watch a site over time, and use analytics for volume.
Why we care about traffic history
Traffic leaves with a site that lapses. What survives is the link history and, sometimes, a record that real people used to visit. The directory lists expired domains with referring domains counted from our web crawl, and its free listings show this same history beside the name.

How does this website traffic checker work?
It reads our copy of the monthly top-site lists, which rank sites by how many real users load them. For the domain you enter, it shows which band the site held in each monthly list since February 2021: top 1k, 10k, 100k or 1M.
How accurate is this website traffic checker?
The data is real, but the answer is a band, not a count. A site in the top 100k is among the 100,000 most-visited sites in the list that month. Exact visits are not published, so any visit number from any free tool is a model. Ours is a rank, and we label it as one.
Is this website traffic checker free?
Yes. One domain at a time needs no signup and no card, only a per-visitor rate limit.
Is there a bulk traffic checker?
Yes, with a free account you can check up to 10 domains in one go, and every row shows the current band, best band and months listed. Without an account, check domains one at a time.
Can I check a competitor's website traffic?
Yes. Enter any competitor's domain and read its band and history. Two sites in different bands differ meaningfully in popularity; two in the same band are not ordered. Sites outside the top 1M show as not listed.
How is rank different from visits?
A rank compares a site with every other site. A visit count is how many sessions it had. Rank is stable under seasonality and model error and good for comparing sites; visits need the site's own analytics or a vendor's estimate.
Why does my site show as not in the top 1M?
It is outside the top 1M, too new, or too small to be included. That does not mean it has no visitors. Most websites are outside the list.
