How to Find Expired Domains with Backlinks (6 Sources, Free and Paid)

Where expired domains with real backlinks come from, the six places to look, what each source costs and misses, and the four checks that separate a linked domain from a domain with a link count.

We run a directory of expired domains with backlinks, which in practice means we have spent most of a year looking at expired domains that have none. Almost no dropped domain carries a link worth having. Finding the few that do is a filtering problem, and the filter is the whole job. This guide is where those domains turn up, what each source costs, what it hides from you, and the checks that stop you registering a number instead of a domain.

A backlink is a link from a page on one site to a page on another. When a domain expires and drops, the pages linking to it do not know. They keep linking, and whoever registers the name next gets those links pointing at their server. That is the entire reason anyone hunts expired domains. How backlinks work covers the mechanism. Where do expired domains with backlinks come from?

There is one place a domain becomes free to register, and that is the drop. Everything else is a market standing in front of it, and the good names get pulled out before they reach the back.

A domain expires. Under ICANN's Expired Registration Recovery Policy, the registrar has to interrupt its DNS for at least the last eight days it is renewable, then delete it. The registry then holds it through a 30-day redemption period and a short pending-delete window, and only then does it drop. The complete guide to expired domains walks that timeline stage by stage.

At two points on the path, someone else gets first pick. Large registrars auction expiring names from their own portfolio before deleting them, so a .com with a visible link profile usually goes to a bidder and never drops at all. Then backorder services fire registration requests at the registry the instant a name is purged, and if two customers wanted it, the service auctions it between them. What reaches the open drop is what the auctions and the catchers did not want, plus what they missed. They miss a surprising amount. Their filters run on the same three or four vendor metrics, and the metrics are crude. That gap is where a person with patience, or a directory with a better index, finds domains.

Free drop lists

ExpiredDomains.net is the largest. It lists pending-delete and dropped names across most TLDs and lets you filter on age, third-party link counts and whether the Wayback Machine has a snapshot. The filtering is better than the 2007 interface suggests.

The problem with a free list is that it is free for everyone. A name that looks good at 2pm was scraped by a dozen scripts at 8am. Whatever is left by the time you finish checking it tends to be what nobody else wanted, which is a signal on its own. Use it as a starting pool.

Registrar auctions

GoDaddy Auctions, NameJet, SnapNames and Dynadot sell expiring names from the registrars' own books before the names can drop. Most well-linked .com names go this way. If the referring-domain count on a listing is high and the name is short, expect competition, and expect the price to track the count rather than the quality. Nobody in the auction has read the linking pages. You are bidding on a number.

Backorder services

DropCatch and services like it take a fee to attempt registration the moment a name drops. Useful when you already know the name. It answers "can I get it" and says nothing about "should I".

Broken links on sites you trust

Pick a site in your subject that employs editors. A university department, a trade publication, a specialist blog that has been running for a decade. Walk its resource pages and older articles with a link checker. Every dead outbound link points somewhere, and some of those somewheres expired. A domain found this way has a link from a page you already trust, on a topic you already care about, which is most of the evaluation done before you start.

The Common Crawl web graph

Common Crawl publishes host-level and domain-level link graphs for free, built from its open crawl of the web. The domain graph, in their words, "is built by aggregating the host graph at the pay-level domain (PLD) level based on the public suffix list maintained on publicsuffix.org". Every edge is a link from one domain to another, so every domain in the graph with inbound edges and no live site is a candidate.

Two caveats from the same page. Hostnames are stored "in reverse domain name notation and all types of links are listed, including purely 'technical' links pointing to images, JavaScript libraries, web fonts, etc." A raw in-degree is therefore not a count of editorial links. And it is not a tool. You download compressed edge lists, join them to vertex files, check each candidate's registration status yourself, and then read the links. A developer with a large disk and a free weekend can do it. We did, and it took considerably more than a weekend.

A curated directory

The Revised directory is the sixth source, and since we built it we can be specific. It starts from a Common Crawl web graph snapshot of around 400,000 candidate domains, keeps the ones with verified inbound links from real sites, screens their archived history, and re-checks that each one is still available. About 12,000 pass. The names are masked until you reveal one on a plan. The metrics, the referring-domain band, the sources linking in and the archive timeline are public.

Some numbers from that set, rounded. The median listing has about 24 referring domains, and three quarters sit between 10 and 50. Around 7 in 10 are .com. Roughly 4 in 10 have a link from Wikipedia among their sources, which is what the Wikipedia source hub lists. The aged domains hub filters to names first seen five or more years ago, and new this week shows what was added most recently.

One thing in that data I did not expect. Across the directory, a high referring-domain count correlates with a lower authority score, not a higher one. The domains with hundreds of linking sites are mostly the ones that got spammed at some point, and the graph ranks them accordingly. A count is a sort key at best.

How do you tell a real link profile from a fake one?

Every source above hands you a count, and the count is the least useful thing on the page.

Read referring domains, not backlinks. One site can put the same footer link on ten thousand pages, which is ten thousand backlinks and one referring domain. Then read the referring domains as a list of names. Sites you recognise, sites that still publish, sites where a person would have chosen to link. One citation from a university page or a trade journal outweighs a few hundred directory listings, and no metric encodes that difference.

Anchor text tells you how the links got there. A profile that grew on its own is mostly the brand name, the bare URL and phrases like "this study" or "here". When a third of the anchors are the same commercial phrase, somebody built the profile. Google's spam policies define link spam as "the practice of creating links to or from a site primarily for the purpose of manipulating search rankings", and exact-match anchors at scale are the plainest sign of it.

Then the archive. The Wayback Machine shows what the domain was at each point in its life. You want one consistent subject over years. You also want to find the stretch, usually right before expiry, where it turned into something else, because a domain that was a regional charity for eight years and a casino affiliate for the last two carries both histories. What should you check before registering one?

Four checks. Each is cheaper than the next, so stop at the first one that fails.

Run the name through the expired domain checker first. It reports whether the name is registered right now, when it was first archived, how many snapshots exist and what the site was about in each era. Most bad candidates die here, on an abrupt change of subject.

Then open the snapshots yourself. Ten minutes across three or four years of the domain's life tells you more than any score will.

Pull the links with the backlink checker. It lists the source page, the anchor and the link type for each referring domain it holds, from our Common Crawl index. A thin result means the domain is not in our index, not that it has no links, so pair it with a vendor free tier for the headline count.

The domain authority comes last. It is a 0 to 100 score from the domain's position in the Common Crawl graph, and it is good for sorting a long list. It is bad for deciding, because composite scores can be manufactured and the manufactured ones look best.

What is the best expired domain finder? There is no single one, because each source sees a different slice of the web. Free lists have volume. Auctions have the strongest .com names, at a price. Do expired domains keep their backlinks? The links on other sites stay where they are when a domain drops, so the next registrant gets the same inbound links. Whether search engines keep counting them depends on what you put on the domain and whether it fits what the linking pages were pointing at. Google has published no rule beyond its expired domain abuse policy.

How many expired domains have real backlinks? Very few. Of roughly 400,000 candidate domains in our web graph snapshot, about 12,000 have inbound links from sites we could verify and an archive history that passed screening. Even among those, the median is around 24 referring domains.
